News Headline Reader for the Raspberry Pi AIY Project

Since the BBC took down the news feed I had been using to listen to news headlines I’ve missed this function.

So I’ve put something together to replace it. You can find the code in the headlines.py file on my Github repo.

You will need to have feedparser installed, you can install this with
sudo pip install feedparser

This responds to the keyword “headlines” and reads out the title and summary of the latest 3 headlines in the BBC news RSS feed, the main problem is it doesn’t sound great because it uses the fairly robotic sounding “local” voice.

You could change this to read out any RSS feed and any number of entries. Be wary of the length of the feeds, I am not sure of any way to stop it once it starts reading!
